Gassan Glacier: the Japanese ski resort that opens from April to July
Japan's summer skiing paradise
While most Japanese ski resorts are now either winding down or closed for the season, Gassan ski resort, located on the southern slopes of Mt Ubagatake in Yamagata Prefecture, is just getting started.
The resort opens every year from April to July, attracting skiers and snowboarders who are looking to extend their snow season. The setup is fairly basic, with four runs serviced by a single pair lift and some T-bars, but for the novelty of skiing in summer it’s enough to please the crowds.

In truth, the skiing is just one of many attractions in the gorgeous Nishikawa Town (at the foot of Mt. Gassan), and also includes hiking, sightseeing, onsen, cherry blossom viewing and a delightful selection of local culinary delicacies.
In a recent Instagram post, Nishikawa Town wrote that skiing had opened for the season in April 10, attracting skiers from around the country.
