Eighty-one years of official weather data point to one best day for powder in Niseko – and to a longer-term shift in how much snow the resort is getting at all.

Ask around Niseko long enough and everyone has a theory about the snow – when it’s most reliable, which week to book, which years were the good ones. Most of it is folklore, assembled from a handful of memorable seasons and passed around as expertise. We wanted to know what the actual record says.

The result is a full accounting of 81 years of snow depth records and 73 years of daily snowfall data, sourced directly from the Japan Meteorological Agency’s station in Kutchan – the nearest official observation point to Niseko United, now translated and set out in English. Buried inside it is an answer to a question we’d never seen answered with actual data before: if you could choose only one day of the year to be in Niseko, which day should it be?

The single best date to ski Niseko

The answer is January 20.

No other date on the calendar averages more snowfall across the eight decades on record – 13.1cm, on average, on that day alone. It is not the most dramatic figure in the dataset; that distinction belongs to a single 69cm dump in November 1994. But it is arguably the more useful one. A once-in-a-generation storm tells you nothing about how to plan a trip. A calendar date that has quietly, consistently produced more snow than any other, across 73 winters, tells you a great deal.

The tool behind the finding

Alongside this finding, Ski Asia has published an interactive tool that lets readers explore the full record rather than take our word for any of it. It includes a day-by-day snowfall table for every season back to 1953/54, an 81-season chart plotting daily snow depth for every winter since 1945/46 layered on top of one another, a trend chart showing how snowfall by month has shifted over eight decades, and a planner that returns the historical average for any specific travel window a reader enters.

None of the underlying data is new. It has been sitting in JMA’s archives, in Japanese, for as long as the station has been recording. It’s now set out in English, built for skiers rather than meteorologists.

What the rest of the data shows

The single-best-day finding was the discovery that prompted this project, but it is not the most important thing the data contains. Two patterns stand out.

The first is a decline. The ten most recent seasons on record have averaged 25 percent less total snowfall than the first ten seasons in the dataset – 849cm against 1,133cm. This is not a single bad year skewing an average; it is a trend that has held across a full decade of comparison. The season just gone, 2025/26, illustrates it plainly: 751cm of total snowfall, the fourth-lowest season on record, with the earliest snowmelt ever measured at this station, on April 2nd. The season is not only producing less snow – it is also ending sooner than it used to, by roughly a week per decade compared with 70 years ago.

The second pattern is a reminder of how much variability the record still contains, decline notwithstanding. The 1969/70 season remains the best on record by a wide margin, and it did not arrive in isolation – the preceding season, 1968/69, independently holds the record for the single snowiest calendar month ever measured here, January 1969, at 601cm. Christmas, meanwhile, offers its own small case study in unpredictability: the thinnest and the deepest white Christmases in the entire record happened in consecutive years, 1955 and 1956.

None of this is reason to reconsider a trip to Niseko. The mountain remains, by any reasonable global standard, an exceptional place to ski, and even a comparatively lean season there outperforms most alternatives. But skiers who plan carefully deserve to plan with real information rather than folklore, and that was reason enough to build this.
