Vojta Lim is living the dream, running backcountry skiing tours that take clients to some of the snowiest parts of Hokkaido. His business started as a group of friends guiding in Japan in 2013, and to this day he believes that embarking on a trip with his company “should feel like riding with your friends”.
However Lim’s credentials as a backcountry operator have evolved with over a decade in Japan, and he now has a familiarity with the region that has given him the ability to seek out the best conditions for his tour guests.
“Our backcountry tours stand out for their remarkable flexibility, a vital aspect in Hokkaido’s ever-changing conditions”, he says. “We prioritize finding the best snow at all times, with the single purpose of skiing in the best snow and finding the best lines possible.”
We sat down with Vojta for some tips on planning a trip into the Japanese backcountry and to find out what guests can expect from one of his tours.
Give us a suggestion for someone looking to experience the Hokkaido backcountry for the first time
Instead of sticking to the well-known spots like Niseko, consider exploring the lesser-known, smaller resorts scattered across Hokkaido. These gems often offer more authentic experiences and quieter slopes.
Also consider renting a car to enhance your mobility. Having a car allows you to easily move between different resorts based on weather conditions and snow quality. This flexibility ensures that you make the most of your trip, even when the weather isn’t ideal in one area.
Plan an extended stay to truly immerse yourself in the Hokkaido backcountry culture. Spending more time allows you to understand the intricacies of the region, connect with locals, and discover hidden spots that are off the beaten path.
To ensure safety and make best use of your time, consider hiring a knowledgeable local guide. A guide can navigate you through the backcountry while sharing insights about the area’s history, terrain, and snow conditions. This minimizes the risk of getting lost and maximizes your chances of finding the best spots.
What’s your personal favourite backcountry area in Hokkaido and why?
My personal favourite backcountry area in Hokkaido is Daisetsuzan National Park. Its vast space allows for diverse exploration, and the higher elevation ensures exceptional snow quality. The variety of terrain caters to different skill levels, offering both serenity and challenges. This untouched wilderness preserves nature and culture, making it an ideal spot for an authentic backcountry experience.
Off the ski slopes, what are some of the highlights of a 10-day trip?
Apart from being focused on finding the best snow each day, Japanese culture and cuisine is very high on the trip’s agenda. My trip highlights include:
A trip to the Yoichi Whisky Distillery is a chance to immerse yourself in the fascinating world of Japanese whisky-making, learning about the intricate process and enjoy tasting some of their highly acclaimed whiskies.
Relaxing in a natural Japanese onsen, nestled among the trees, is a truly pleasurable experience after a long day of riding. The soothing hot springs offer the perfect way to rejuvenate after your backcountry adventures, providing a tranquil and revitalizing experience.
Our tours also give guests the chance to discover places like Otaru, a charming town known for its picturesque canal and exceptional seafood. We typically also dedicate half a day to discovering Sapporo, with its unique blend of urban vibrancy and winter charm.
What reasons do you think someone should choose a backcountry tour with you over one of the other operators?
Our backcountry tours stand out for their flexibility, a vital aspect in Hokkaido’s ever-changing conditions. We prioritize finding the best snow at all times, ensuring an optimal skiing experience. With no fixed itineraries, we adapt swiftly to deliver the ultimate adventure tailored to current conditions.
Joining our tours also means being part of a community of like-minded individuals. Many lasting friendships are forged during our trips, enhancing the overall journey with shared passion and camaraderie. We stay close to our guests, ensuring a personal touch that’s distinct from more commercial tours. From skiing to onsen to dining, we share the complete experience, guiding you every step of the way, from pick-up to drop-off.
Our tours are more than just skiing; they’re comprehensive experiences. We curate the entire adventure, from thrilling slopes to soothing onsens and delectable dinners. This holistic approach ensures you’re immersed in Hokkaido’s culture and beauty.
We offer the added advantage of free equipment rental. In a region where local rentals can be expensive and uncertain, our inclusion of high-quality gear ensures you’re well-prepared without extra cost or uncertainty.
Lastly, but most importantly, we take safety very seriously. Our guides are seasoned professionals with an in-depth understanding of the terrain and its challenges.
