Eco-hotel opens at Thaiwoo
Marriott International's Element brand has opened its first ski hotel in China.
Element Hotels, a brand extension of Marriott International, has made its first foray into the Chinese ski industry. The company has opened a new hotel at Zhangjiakou’s Thaiwoo Ski Resort. The 164-room Element Chongli hotel is designed to attract longer-staying, eco-conscious guests. The hotel’s guest rooms feature energy-efficient kitchenettes, rain showers and telescopes.
“Our active guests want to explore new destinations while maintaining their daily routines. Whether they’re planning longer stays, traveling with a large group or going on a family vacation, Element Hotels gives them the flexibility and the space to live their lives,” said Mike Fulkerson, Vice President of Brand & Marketing, Asia-Pacific, Marriott International.

Element Chongli has opened at Thaiwoo Ski Resort in China’s Chongli District.
The opening of Element Chongli comes at a time of rapid growth for China’s ski industry. In preparation for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, the government is pouring millions of dollars into winter sports. This has prompted an incredible rise in the number of ski resorts nationwide. Just last month, Wanda Group unveiled the world’s largest indoor ski park, located in Harbin, Heilongjiang province.
Having opened in December 2015, Thaiwoo is among China’s newest ski resorts. Just 220 km from Beijing, the Chongli-based resort has been selected to host Olympic alpine events. Its unusual location surely played a part in this decision. Visible from Thaiwoo’s main gondola is the Great Wall of China.
