The development is part of plans to create "Japan's leading ski resort".

Ski resort operator Hoshino Resorts Inc. has revealed that Alts Bandai Snow Park & Resort and Nekoma Snow Park & Resort will be linked by 810-metre two-seater chairlift for the 2023/24 winter season. The two resorts, located in Japan’s Aizu region will combine to form a skiable area of 189 hectares and 33 courses, making it one of the largest resorts in the country.

The ski areas are already accessible on a single lift ticket, which starts at just ¥4,900 (~US$35) for a 1-day pass. In seasons past, visitors have been able to cross from one to the other via a walking track. The resort is also offering a sharply-priced accommodation package for the upcoming season in a bid to attract international travellers.

Alts Bandai, Nekoma

“The inauguration of the connecting lift will mark the first step toward creating Japan’s leading ski resort”

In a video statement aired last month, Hoshino Resorts CEO Yoshiharu Hoshino noted the importance of the development for the revival of tourism in the region, catering better to both international and domestic visitors.

He also hinted at further development plans for the resort.

“The inauguration of the connecting lift will mark the first step toward creating Japan’s leading ski resort”, he said.

“We will be contributing to the sustainable tourism of Aizu and elsewhere in Fukushima Prefecture.”

Of the two resorts, Alts Bandai is the larger and boasts high-speed hooded lifts and modern facilities, including the ski-in-ski-out Bandaisan Onsen Hotel. It is also famous for its views over the stunning Lake Inawashiroko to the south.

Powder, anyone?

However, riders seeking access to some of Japan’s best powder may find they are better catered for at Nekoma, which benefits from a favourable northerly aspect and superb tree skiing.

Installation of the new lift is already underway, with an opening expected in December 2023.

In celebration of the big news, Hoshino Resorts Bandaisan Onsen Hotel is offering winter visitors 5 nights for just AU$699, which includes breakfast and a 4-day lift pass. Visit snowjapantravel.com.au for more details or enquire directly here
