A rare chance to stake a claim in a Hokkaido resort with bold ambitions
Kamui Ski Links is a mountain that has long flown under the radar. Its snow is light, dry, silky, and consistently excellent, and the slopes are rarely crowded – a combination that has drawn a loyal local following, without the international attention that has fallen on places like Niseko and Hakuba. Now, Kamui Resort, an unusual and ambitious alpine development at the base of the mountain, is releasing 24 new residential plots in its West Village. Unlike typical Hokkaido resorts, Kamui is not just about luxury condos or commercial sprawl. Guided by Olympian Gota Miura and ex-Niseko executive Nigel Abbott, the project combines world-class skiing with long-term plans for wellness, adventure, and world-leading regenerative medicine – creating a development quietly shaping into something unlike anything else in Japan.

A rare ski-in, ski-out opportunity
Kamui Resort has opened expressions of interest for 24 new plots in its West Village, part of the resort’s ongoing development at the base of Kamui Ski Links. The village occupies roughly 30 hectares of forested land and is being developed in stages, following the successful sale of the first 28 plots.
Designing a four-season alpine village
Kamui Resort is being conceived as a pedestrian-oriented village that balances Japanese design sensibilities with international standards. The master plan includes hotels, villas, apartments, restaurants, shops, onsen, as well as wellness and anti-ageing facilities. While much of this is still in development, the plan is designed to ensure the village will be lively in both winter and summer, offering residents and guests year-round outdoor recreation.
During winter, residents will have doorstep access to the slopes of Kamui thanks to the planned construction of a T-bar that runs through the village. The resort’s terrain ranges from gentle beginner slopes to challenging tree runs (described as “simply amazing” by Olympian Gota Miura). The resort averages over 10 meters of dry, powdery snow per season, with a southwest aspect that preserves snow quality even after sunny days. By contrast with busier Hokkaido resorts, the slopes are rarely crowded, making it ideal for both families and advanced skiers seeking space to explore.
When the snow melts, the focus shifts to green-season activities: mountain biking, e-bike tours, canyoning, hiking, and stand-up paddleboarding along the Ishikari River. The surrounding farmland of Fukagawa supplies fresh produce, grains, and dairy products, reinforcing the resort’s connection to local culture and cuisine.
A long-term vision: regenerative medicine
Perhaps the most unusual aspect of Kamui Resort is its long-term plan to become a global hub for regenerative medicine, anchored by the proposed Akasha Sanctuary. This facility does not yet exist; it is a future ambition intended to integrate advanced medical therapies, stem-cell research, diagnostics, and anti-ageing programmes into the resort experience.
The idea is that guests could eventually combine outdoor adventure with access to personalised wellness treatments – something unprecedented in a ski resort.
Grantley Abbott, a partner in the Akasha project, described the concept as a way to combine medical therapy with outdoor activity: “Many skiers blow out their knees or have cartilage issues – this therapy addresses those problems. We’ll have 7, 14 and 21 day programs. People can ski and do activities while getting the medical side done efficiently.”
Investment potential and community
Even in its early stages, Kamui stands apart from most Hokkaido resorts. The release of West Village plots marks a small step in the village’s gradual growth, while long-term plans around wellness and regenerative medicine hint at ambitions still unfolding. Much of this direction is shaped by Gota Miura, whose experience as an Olympian and longevity expert seems to have informed a resort where skiing, adventure, and well-being are intertwined.
