JNTO Executive Director says that consumer travel is the next "logical step".

Despite borders still being closed to tourists, Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) has told Australian travellers to start planning holidays in Japan ahead of an anticipated return to travel. The comments came from JNTO’s Sydney office executive director, Yoko Tanaka, during a media night promoting the agency’s new campaign – one that features Australian television personalities Gary Mehigan and Manu Feildel.

“The border is opening step by step, with business travellers and international students currently able to enter, so we know consumer travel is the next logical step,” said Tanaka.

“We cannot wait to welcome Australians back to Japan and now is the time to start planning a trip.”

Also present at the event was Consul-General to Japan, Kiya Masahiko, who was optimistic about Australian travellers returning to Japan, noting that in the six years from 2014–2019 visitor numbers had doubled from 300,000 to 600,000.

“…there is pent up demand for travel to Japan for Australians who come to Japan for our cuisine, our cultural traditions, and our natural experiences. We look forward to welcoming Australians back to Japan.”

After two difficult seasons without international tourists, Japan’s snow industry operators and travel agencies are now planning for a return to business as usual for the 2022/23 ski season. Many, including Active Life Group, Mountainwatch Travel and Nozawa Holidays,  have already released rates and accommodation packages for the season.
