Australian skiers have had it tough this season, with the disappointment of a shortened season compounded by a heated public debate over the rising cost of lift tickets. Popular resorts like Thredbo, Falls Creek and Mount Buller have all now closed – long before their typical end date around the October long weekend. Of the major Aussie resorts, only Perisher remains open – for now.
However, Japanese ski resort Palcall Tsumagoi in Gunma prefecture has come to the rescue and will now offer free lift passes to 24/25 season pass holders of any Australian resort. Lift passes will be provided for the full duration of a stay at the resort’s ski-in ski-out hotel.
“We love our Aussie guests and hate to see skiers affected by poor conditions, which is a tough reality of the industry we work in”, said Sayuri Hiroi, Business Development Manager at Palcall Tsumagoi.
“As skiers, we mostly just want more time spent doing what we love, and we hope that this offer will do just that”, continues Hiroi.
“Our resort is relatively unknown to Australians and has fewer international tourists than the likes of Niseko and Hakuba, but we have lots to offer, like our famous ‘sunrise gondola’, our terrain park – the largest in Japan – and some very good groomed skiing.”
Now under international ownership, Palcall is slowly gaining traction amongst family visitors, who enjoy it for the ease of travel from Tokyo, the convenient all-in-one setup – with gondola access, restaurants, shops and the hotel all under one roof – as well as the proximity to cultural attractions like Kusatsu Onsen.
